Ethan Shard

Doctors refer to skin that has lost its protection as exposed tissue. Ethan Shard seems to believe that some faces exist permanently in this condition. His figures inhabit colours that cannot sustain them: inflamed reds, motionless blues, whites clinging to the face like a bandage. Hands seek one another, bodies lean towards each other, and eyes grow until they occupy the place of the wound they are trying to conceal. Painting repairs nothing; it merely confirms that every fragility needs a surface on which to remain open.
